There’s a popular quote making it’s way around Pinterest that makes a lot of sense, “Enjoy the little things. One day you’ll realize they were the BIG things.” When you’re a mom it’s easy to overlook moments that seem so mundane and even insignificant.
If you’re caring for an infant or a small child there isn’t much time to stop and smell those roses you hear so much about. As a matter of fact, you aren’t around too many good smells anymore period. Offensive scents are the only ones that get your undivided attention. If it’s not a full diaper or the smell of smoke it’s not on the radar.
So much of my mothering years are a blur. I can hardly believe we’ve survived this crazy ride. Now that my oldest two are grown adults and my younger two are close to being full grown, I thought I’d share unimportant to-do’s and have-to’s and a few daily “little things” I wish I could snatch back. The truth is—BIG things have always been disguised as little things.
- Tiny arms and legs that flap and flail about in baby joy when they recognize your voice.
- Chubby dimpled hands stretched high above their head begging you to hold them.
- Baby syllables pleading for “one more story”.
- The heaviness of a child asleep on your shoulder.
- Seeking eyes that scan the crowd and rest on you.
- The awful mess of a room full of their favorite things.
- Excited footsteps running to the door for a “happy you’re home” hug.
- Tears that only you can comfort.
- Fears that only you can calm.
- Joy that only you can give.
Take a minute and thank God for a tiny, not-so insignificant slice of time. You’ll discover these little things? They were the miracles of motherhood all along.
Therefore I will give thanks to You among the nations,
O Lord and I will sing praises to Your name. Psalm 18:49
