Dennis Rainey & Bob Lepine Made Me Cry – Family Life

I didn’t expect to get choked up during my interview today, but I did. Dennis Rainey and Bob Lepine might just be two of the most genuine people I’ve had the privilege to meet. When Dennis Rainey handed me my book and asked me to sign it for his daughter in law, well, I was shocked. Here’s a man who has written dozens of books and reached millions of lives with his ministry. He sits on the Dallas Theological Seminary board—and he asked meto sign a book. Wow…see why I adore these guys?

When these two began digging in to the story behind ‘Just too Busy’ and asked me to read from my book the letter Meghan wrote to me on page 67,  I got a little choked up.

So, how do I explain my interview at Family Life? How do I express what it was like to eat lunch with Dennis Rainey and Bob Lepine? Or, share the experience of sitting across from the two voices that kept me company when I did the dishes in the morning when my kids were tiny tots?

Surreal.

When it was time to begin recording Dennis (he said I could call him Dennis) prayed. He prayed for their listeners, for a good interview, and for my family, my future ministry opportunities and for my book to get into the hands of many moms.

Surreal.

There was much laughter throughout lunch and during the interview. Paul and the kids got to be a part of it all. I was so glad for that. I wasn’t as thrilled when my son, David, shared an embarrassing story with Bob Lepine, or when my adorable daughter Grace threw me under the bus..ahem…shared how Samuel has a TV in his bedroom. Thanks Grace. I guess I won’t be bringing up on the air the fact that I’m adamantly opposed to a TV in a kids room. Nor will I tell the listeners I wrote a whole chapter on slaying your media dragons. Perfect.  **In my defense, mom guilt got the best of me when we moved to Nashville a few weeks ago. I went to Goodwill, purchased a $10.00 TV for his video games and allow him on occasion to watch Netflix. Which has parental controls and only G rated shows at his fingertips. So there. **

To sum up the best parts of the day, here are a few special moments:

    • Tonda – what a treasure. Wish she lived closer. This woman is a dynamo. While working out our travel itinerary, times and even what we were having for lunch, this incredible person would even check emails late at night if I had a question. Yep, she’s great.

  • Keith – Editor extraordinaire. Our kids favorite person of the day. He makes each Family Life interview sound fantastic. He told me, “You did great. You really did. And, even if you mess up I can still make you sound good.”  I replied, “You’re that good, huh? Can you make me sound skinny?”

  • Tracey Eyster – This talented lady is the woman behind MomLifeToday.com  She just came out with her incredible book ‘Be The Mom – Overcome Attitude Traps and Enjoy Your Kids’ . You must get it. After my time with Dennis and Bob,  I went to a different studio in the building and taped a few video interviews for her website. Then we turned the tables and I interviewed her for my site here. What a doll. I really dig her. We are women on the same mission; to encourage moms and point them to the only One who can be their everything.

I’ve done dozens of radio interviews in the past twelve months but my interview with Family Life was special.  When Paul and I first began facilitating Bible studies in our home it was their HomeBuilder series we used. David and Paul used their Passport 2 Purity videos a few years ago.  And here’s a little tidbit…on page 184 of my book I reference being at a marriage conference with my husband. Guess which one it is? A Weekend to Remember

Family Life is a ministry dear to my heart because families are dear to my heart—especially this one.

I can’t wait to hear your interview! I heard yesterday that you were in the building, that your book is awesome, that you are awesome, and that your video interviews with Tracey are great! I think it’s great that your kids “threw you under the bus!” Tonda is, indeed, the greatest, as it Keith Lynch. Isn’t he one of the most encouraging people ever? I would say more, but I have to run and get your book!

You did it!!! You must make sure we all know the air date so we can hear it.

I’m so excited for you! You’re a pro! May blessings abound to you, Paul and the kids.

Love you and really miss you!

[…] Our family had the incredible privilege of meeting these ministry folks a few years ago when my first book Just Too Busy came out. (Listen to those interviews HERE.) Our family arrived in Tennessee just weeks before and took a road trip there. It was amazing to tape in the studio while Paul and the kids gave moral support and watched from the sound booth. […]
